Take Me Out To the Ballgame: Postseason Edition

Jessica Sanders –

For baseball lovers, it is one of the most exciting times of the year: the playoffs.

It is getting close to the World Series. The St. Louis Cardinals fans are used to being this close, but for the Chicago Cubs fans, they have not been this close for seven years. It is a rather exciting time. But, it is not even the Cubs who have not been able to play in postseason for the longest amount of time. It has been twenty-two years since the Toronto Blue Jays have played in the playoffs. Even the Houston Astros have not played in October since 2005 and the New York Mets were in it the following year. Along with the Cardinals, the Kansas City Royals were in the playoffs last year. The Texas Rangers were last in the playoffs in 2012, while the LA Dodgers had joined the Cardinal’s last year in the playoffs.

For the first time in history, the Cardinals and Cubs faced each other for a spot toward the World Series. The rivalry between the teams is as hot as ever; the fans were nervous with anticipation, as they wondered who was going to advance. The Cards won the first game 4-0, but the Cubs had a comeback, winning the second game 6-3, the third game 8-6, and the fourth and final game 6-4. This series was the Cubs first time winning a playoff game in Wrigley Field since 2003.

The team also beat a MLB record, hitting six homeruns in a postseason game. Since one record is just never enough, in game four the Cubs clinched the Division for the first time in history at Wrigley Field. The Cubs are now one step closer to the World Series, as the team advances to the National League Championship Series.

The LA Dodgers and New York Mets, the other two National League teams fighting for a spot in the World Series, have also each won a game. The Mets won game one 3-1, while the Dodgers won game two 5-2. The third game was definitely a nail biter for fans and baseball lovers. The Mets beat the Dodgers 13-8. That is what you call an action packed game! In other news, the Dodgers player, Chase Utely has been suspended for two games, after sliding into Mets playing Ruben Tejada, and breaking his leg. In game four, the Dodgers beat the Mets 3-1, making the teams once again tied. In game five, the Dodgers failed to take advantage of their home field and lost 2-3, allowing the Mets to move on to face the Cubs.

In the American League, the Rangers lead after winning game one 5-3, and game two 6-4 against the Blue Jays. In game three and four, the Blue Jays are coming back into the series, as they won 5-1 and 8-4. In game five, the Blue Jays beat the Rangers 6-3, winning the series. The Blue Jays advanced to the American League Championship Series.

The Astros took the lead over the Royals after winning the third game 4-2. The Astros had won the first game 5-2, while the Royals won the second game 5-4. The Royals tied the series back up after winning 9-6. In game five, the Royals took the series win 7-2. They will be playing the Blue Jays in the ALCS.

Those advancing to the Championship Series will compete in their division and the winners of each division will head to the World Series for the ultimate faceoff. There are plenty of games left until the 2015 World Series, which starts October 27, so anything can happen. What a great season of baseball it has been so far, and should continue to be.
